This Indiana food stamp eligibility calculator estimates your Indiana SNAP eligibility and monthly benefit using Indiana's actual current rules, not outdated information. As of April 2025, Indiana requires an asset test for essentially all SNAP households -- the broad-based categorical eligibility program many online sources still describe no longer applies. Indiana's resource limits are the federal-standard $3,000 for most households, or $4,500 if a household member is age 60 or older or has a disability.

Your household

Tell us who's in your household. This determines which income and resource limits apply.

Include everyone you buy and prepare food with. Spouses and most children under 22 must be included even if they eat separately.

Does anyone in your household meet either of these?

This can remove the income cap on housing costs and raise your resource limit.

Does everyone in your household receive SSI, Temporary Assistance (TANF), Supplemental Aid to the Blind, or Supplemental Payments?

If so, your household may skip the resource and income limit tests.

Indiana SNAP Income Limits

Indiana's standard gross income test is 130% of the federal poverty level, and the net income test is 100% after deductions. Households with a member age 60 or older or with a disability skip the gross income test but must still meet the net income test.

Indiana SNAP Deductions

Indiana applies the standard federal deductions used to calculate your net income: a standard deduction based on household size, a 20% deduction on earned income, and a deduction for excess shelter costs, uncapped for households with a member age 60 or older or with a disability. For those same households, Indiana deducts verified medical costs above a $35 threshold; Indiana does not offer a flat standard medical deduction.

Frequently Asked Questions About SNAP in Indiana

Does Indiana have an asset (resource) limit for SNAP?

Yes. As of April 2025, Indiana requires an asset test for nearly all SNAP households, and Senate Enrolled Act 1 (effective 7/1/2026) restored the federal-standard limits: $3,000 for most households, or $4,500 if a household member is age 60 or older or has a disability.

Does Indiana still use broad-based categorical eligibility?

No. Indiana eliminated its broad-based categorical eligibility program in April 2025, and Senate Enrolled Act 1 (effective 7/1/2026) ended expanded categorical eligibility outright. Only households where everyone receives SSI or TANF cash assistance remain fully exempt from the resource, gross, and net income tests.

Does Indiana offer a standard medical deduction?

No, Indiana does not offer a flat standard medical deduction. Actual verified medical costs above $35 a month are used for household members age 60 or older or with a disability.

What utility allowances does Indiana use?

Indiana has four utility standards: one for heating or cooling costs, one for two or more other utilities, one for a single other utility, and one for telephone-only households. A household receives whichever one it qualifies for, not a combination.

How is my Indiana SNAP benefit calculated?

Indiana subtracts 30% of your net monthly income, rounded up to the next dollar, from the maximum monthly allotment for your household size.
